Be Here, Now

“The past is already gone, the future is not yet here. There’s only one moment for you to live.”

“As you walk and eat and travel, be where you are. Otherwise you will miss most of your life.”

“Every morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.”

- Buddha

Walk a Humble Path

“Know from the rivers in clefts and in crevices: those in small channels flow noisily, the great flow silent. Whatever’s not full makes noise. Whatever is full is quiet.”

“Even as a solid rock is unshaken by the wind, so are the wise unshaken by praise or blame.”

“Imagine that every person in the world is enlightened but you. They are all your teachers, each doing just the right things to help you.”

- Buddha

Facebook Conversations

Just had coffee with the guys, good guys, but it was very discouraging. Everybody just prattled on and on about themselves. I listened attentively, asked questions and encouraged them to say more. But it never occurred to any one to return the favor. When I shared something about myself it just fell flat; no leading questions, no appreciation of my experience. They didn't know what to do when the conversation veered away from being about them. Mostly, we seemed to have lost the skill of interactive conversation. Everyone talks in Facebook posts, telling a complete story, no input or prompting expected or even wanted. And when they're done, if you don't relate a complete story yourself they'll just launch into their next tale of their life.

Word of the Day

Word of the Day: grandissimus.

" Look at the sailor, called the mincer, who now comes along, and assisted by two allies, heavily backs the grandissimus, as the mariners call it, and with bowed shoulders, staggers off with it as if he were a grenadier carrying a dead comrade from the field." - Herman Melville.

Success is not Final

For All His Old Age

Chasing an old, blind whale that's missing one of its side fins:

" For all his old age, and his one arm, and his blind eyes, he must die the death and be murdered, in order to light the gay bridals and other merry-makings of men, and also to illuminate the solemn churches that preach unconditional inoffensiveness by all to all."

We are a Grief Illiterate Nation

A Thought Worth Remembering

Don't Forget

On the anniversary of September 11, I always take a moment to reflect.

I’m convinced that grief and loss affect everyone, that we’re all grieving in one way or another. And the truth is: no one knows how to truly process those emotions.

I’ve said it many times before: we are a grief illiterate nation. We expect there to be a standard timetable for it. We don’t make space for it. We don’t feel safe talking about it. We want it to follow predictable steps and then for everything to get back to normal.

The result is that we try to bury our grief, medicate away our pain, and act as if it’s not there.  And yet it pops up in all kinds of ways and in places we least expect.

If you are truly awake in your own life, you are in touch with the loss you have experienced. And it’s no doubt painful. The best way to cope with it is to deal with it kindly, gently, and with the support of a community.

I hope we can use anniversaries like 9/11 and the upcoming one year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting to keep in our minds and in our hearts the knowledge that everyone deals with these feelings on a daily basis.

If we truly remembered that, we would be kind to everyone. We would be gentler with our fellow human beings and with ourselves.

We live in a fast-paced, tough and cold world. We don’t need to. By being more aware and awake, we can make a choice to be conscious, caring and compassionate to ourselves and others every day of the year.

Now there’s a thought worth celebrating, worth remembering. What are your memories

Quote: Brene Brown

“We don’t want to be victims in the story. We don’t even want to be heroes in a story. We want to be the author of the story. And you can’t do that unless you own the story and dig into it.” - Brene Brown

Evening Walk

Walked to the Balboa Park Desert Garden and back. 4.6 mile round trip. Peed behind a bush for the first time in a long a time. Very fun.
