The San Diego Symphony Plays Harry Potter

Tonight's show was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone with the John Williams score played by our own San Diego Symphony. Usher Captains tonight were Linda, Sue, Yours Truly, and Beverly with our fearless leader, House Manager Robert in the back. This was a lot of fun.

There's something magical about watching this movie with 2300 people excited to be there. At the end while the credits rolled, except for a few who ran to the bathroom, the whole audience stayed glued to their seats while the orchestra [played the finale. When finished, they didn't get just a rousing ovation, the audience gave them a roaring standing ovation. Thank you John Williams for introducing people to the wonders of the symphony orchestra.

The Chieftains

Irish music, Irish dancing with some American country music and ABBA thrown in for good measure. So much fun!

Beethoven's Ninth

Tonight the San Diego Symphony performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It was a thrilling performance and a very fun night. I got to help them scan tickets at the door. I did pretty well heading everybody in the right direction for my first time, I think. It was a big crowd, the Hall was nearly full. And everybody was so very nice and excited to be there, many for the first time. I just really had a lot of fun.

Home Alone

The concert tonight was the John Williams score to the movie "Home Alone". The Symphony played the music live while the movie ran on 3 large screens set up around the stage. It was surprisingly fun and effective. The hall was sold out and the audience was fun and enthusiastic, laughing and applauding from the opening 20th Century Fox fanfare. They'd all arrived dressed nicely and looking forward to a nice evening. At the end they all stayed for the extended finale after the credits and gave the orchestra and chorus and rousing standing ovation. There's something magical about being in a full theater with an enthusiastic audience for a special screening of a movie that we don't get watching them home alone. A great night!

Danny Elfman's Music from the Movies of Tim Burton

This was a great concert! The music by itself as played by the San Diego Symphony was exciting and complex, truly thrilling. It was an expanded orchestra with saxophone, piano, harp, and lots of percussion. The large audience was very much into it, many of them arriving in costume. It was a great evening.

Viva Mariachi!

Sunday night's Symphony Bayside Summer Nights featured mariachi music and Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. Man are those guys good! Incredible virtuoso playing and singing with exciting rhythms and melodies. And the entire audience knew the music and had a great time. A great night!

Seth MacFarlane

Last night I ushered for the Symphony Bayside Summer Nights for the second time. Seth MacFarlane was the guest soloist. He sang classics from the '30s and '40s, but not the same ones everyone else has done. It was a beautiful night. The other ushers and the patrons were all really nice. I had a great time. I was especially impressed by his ability to sing while through the fireworks. What a great night!

A Midsummer Night's Concert

Tonight I ushered for the San Diego Symphony Bayside Summer Nights. It was fun and beautiful with the lights of downtown on one side and the sun setting over the bay on the other side and the gorgeous sounds of the Symphony playing Mendelssohn and Holst. Plus, I saw Phil, Scott, and Mary who came to see the concert. A thrilling evening.
